This March he already felt the need for an uplifting project that would take the minds of people away from all that anxiety, pain, loneliness and misery that the pandemic was (and still is) bringing. Alas asked his Instagram followers to send in their photographs for a unique project, &#8216;<em>The Quarantine Days<\/em>&#8216;. The images were then given a high-fashion gloss thanks to Alas\u2019s creative direction and photo editing skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"415\" height=\"523\" src=\"https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Marc-Jacobs.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Marc-Jacobs.png 415w, https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Marc-Jacobs-238x300.png 238w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><figcaption>Marc Jacobs &amp; Mert Alas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The submissions far exceeded his expectations. \u201cAt first I doubted myself, I thought that there wouldn\u2019t be many people or that it would mostly be selfies with nothing of substance, but I was shocked,\u201d he says. \u201cI love that there are mothers, nurses, lawyers, all submitting. People were DM-ing me to ask questions: \u2018How do I light things better?\u2019 \u2018Is it better at this angle?\u2019 It was truly surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"378\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Luis-de-Javier.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-756\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Luis-de-Javier.png 378w, https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Luis-de-Javier-216x300.png 216w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><figcaption>Luis de Javier &amp; Mert Alas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mert received over 2000 submissions. Once the selection of the best images was made, Alas painstakingly edited each shot the way he would an editorial. \u201cAs an artist, you grow to be subconsciously selfish about your work\u2014you\u2019re only as good as your last picture,\u201d he says. \u201cThis time, it wasn\u2019t about me or my audience. I wanted to take an amateur photo and do as much to it, put as much love into it as I can. [Adjusting] the tones, the colours, the crop, adding new layers and just seeing what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"398\" height=\"525\" src=\"https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Amber-Valetta.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Amber-Valetta.png 398w, https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Amber-Valetta-227x300.png 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><figcaption>Amber Valetta &amp; Mert Alas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The results are gallery-worthy pictures brimming with emotion: masked figures standing before curtains, ballerinas taking to the backyard, and corseted beauties perched on balconies. Even with limited resources and restrictions on movement, Alas\u2019s collaborators managed to deliver artistic flair. Naturally, some familiar faces made their way into the portfolio. Marc Jacobs, Mariacarla Boscono, Amber Valletta, and visual artists Jake and Dinos Chapman all feature, though Alas insists he judged the images based on merit, not star power. \u201cI had a lot of model friends send me pictures, and I said, \u2018Look, guys, I\u2019m not going to use all of these because then it\u2019s going to look like I\u2019m doing a fashion story!\u2019 \u201d he says. \u201cEveryone\u2019s input felt like support more than anything else; they understood what we\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"517\" height=\"352\" src=\"https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Kimani-Worghs.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-758\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Kimani-Worghs.png 517w, https:\/\/beautyforabetterworld.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Kimani-Worghs-300x204.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><figcaption>Kimani Worghs &amp; Mert Alas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Intended to highlight the importance of having an artistic outlet in even the darkest times, the photos reflect the ingenuity and the escapist power of fashion photography. \u201cIt\u2019s a little escape and it\u2019s rewarding to create and be a part of a moment,\u201d says Alas. \u201cAs artists, photographers, stylists and magazine [editors], we sell dreams and make money from those dreams. Now it\u2019s our industry\u2019s time to give back -and how do we do that?
